Use simple hand stitches to create a unique, one-of-a-kind pillow top following the stitching pattern pictured, or coming up with your own design.
I'm happy to share this project and my love of textiles with you. I've worked together with my friend and shop owner, Lana Norton, to choose fabrics and thread that we think you’ll enjoy stitching and displaying in your home.
The appliqued piece has been dyed in a natural indigo vat using a Japanese dye recipe that’s been used for hundreds of years. I folded Kaufman Kona cotton and clamped it between boards, a technique known as itajime shibori. I then dipped the bundle in the indigo vat five times and left to dry for three days. Then I unclamped the fabric, folded it in the opposite direction and clamped it between boards again before dipping it five more times. The repeated dips create a range of blues and a rich, deep indigo blue color.
Once the shibori piece was rinsed and laundered Lana and I met at her shop Quilt ‘n’ Things Fiber Arts to choose the coordinating fabric from her collection. Using sashiko threads dyed in the same indigo vat, I then hand-stitched a sample pillow by appliqueing the plaid cotton onto the dotted batik using simple running stitches formed into crosses.
No two kits are exactly alike. The fabrics come out of the dye bath a bit differently each time and not two cuts from the same piece of cloth are the same. You'll be creating a pillow that only you can make using a kit that only I can make.
I hope you'll share pictures of your work with me so that I can feature it in my Student Gallery.
