Item details

Made with clear glass fused in my studio, these eyes are 100% hand-painted with permanent pigments (no glued paper prints used). Cabochon style (high domed top, flat bottom) approximately 1/4" thick. You will receive one eye (for pairs, just enter 2 in quantity) very similar to what is featured in the photo. As the eyes are hand painted, they will be more like eyes as found in nature in that the brushstrokes will make each eye one of a kind but yet close enough to be considered a pair (if 2 selected). Due to nature of the curvature of the glass, the pupils will follow you at any angle viewed.

As these are hand made, sizes can vary slightly (hence 6/7mm, 9/10mm, etc) and recommended for use in dolls, animals, sculptures rather than those applications that require an exact fit such as a bezel. Need a size not shown? Just send me a convo and we'll put together a custom order for the size desired.

About the eyes: After cutting the glass sheet to size, the cut pieces are placed in a kiln and heated/annealed to the half dome shape. Once cooled, the clear half dome (cabochon) is painted with a reverse painting technique with the last layer painted black. Pigments used are water resistant, permanent, light fast, temperature safe to 300 degrees F. Safe to use with glue.

Not for use in any products for children under 3 years of age as may present choking hazard.

SHIPPING: Your order ships for one flat cost no matter how many eyes are purchased. Items shipped 1-3 business days after payment received. Priority Mail is also available. A tracking number will be provided for U.S. orders but we are not responsible for packages lost due to USPS postal carrier errors or theft.

Please see the FAQ section regarding methods to attach the eyes to artwork. Need to sew on rather than glue? For most sizes a button shank back is available for small additional fee. See "add on" listings for details.

Need a color not shown? Custom orders are welcome.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Since the age of 4, Christine Musser has known she wanted to be an artist. Coming from a family of artists and craftsmen (grandfather a landscape painter in New England, father a woodcarver), she grew up exposed to a variety of arts especially drawing and painting. After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in Illustration, she relocated to the Pacific NW in 1990 and began painting on multi layers of Plexiglas which led to an interest in fused glass. In addition to over 20 years of glass experience, she currently works in a variety of media including needle felt, silk painting, polymer clay, papier mache, digital illustration as well as painting. She feels her knowledge of various materials helps to keep her work fresh and often finds that a technique that works in one medium can carry over into another and produce interesting results.
The eyes featured in GlassEyeSupply are often used in her own personal artwork which can be found in Etsy shop, MerrikinDesigns.

FAQs

As of July 14, 2017, they are being sold as singles. Need a pair? Just chose 2 in the drop down menu for quantity.

Yes, custom sizes and colors are available. Please convo for details.

In most cases, sizes 6mm to 26mm are available unless the intricacy of the design is too complex to do as a smaller eye. Need larger than 26mm? Just ask.

These eyes are durable. The paints used are permanent, water resistant, lightfast, and temperature safe to 300 degrees F.

For most sizes, yes. Please see the "add on button shank option". For a minimal charge, shanks will be glued using E6000 industrial adhesive to cabochon(s) back. Add 1 day to the processing turnaround time for glue to set.

As these are cabochons (half marbles), I recommend E6000 glue (use fresh tube. Let stand at least 24 hours before moving). Shanks are available (for most sizes) for additional cost if sewing on is preferred. For my own wool soft sculptures, I will either glue the eyes to a piece of flat felt, leave a little felt around the glass while cutting out. Then I felt the cut felt/eye onto my work. You can also make an eye socket, glue eye in, then place eyelids/detail around.

In the case of the eyes, a cabochon is a flat backed, high domed half marble.

Yes! Due to the way the glass is formed and painted, the eyes always seem to be looking at you.

Not much I can say, the pair I bought was just as described. And the person who makes these is good at what they do, you can tell a lot of time goes into them. Though the eye itself is well, perfect, i would have liked more pictures in the listing..! It is a color changing eye for example. I think people would love to see these wonderful eyes on full display.
