Pen is NOT included. Pictured are sample blanks and represent what you will receive – more than likely NOT these exact blanks. Also, note the oxidized Mesquite block under the blanks. This is a natural occurrence and will happen to your Mesquite turnings.
Each package contains 5 blanks 3/4” x 3/4” x 7”. 7” long blanks give you enough stock to turn a pen or pencil and keychain with matching grain. Or produce companion items with 3" bodies. None of these blanks are bias cut or end grain pieces. Mesquite turns well with sharp tools. Shape sand with 320 then 600. Sometimes I will finish to 2400 if I notice some curl in the grain – just to make it pop. Mesquite will take most finishes; however, I favor Tru-Oil™ gun stock oil for a soft, natural feel. I also use the thin CA glue product from Chefwarekits.com only when a client prefers a glossy finish.
Here in Texas we use Mesquite wood for everything from fence posts to furniture and bar-b-q smoking to jewelry making. Mesquite is a strong hardwood and more times than not, highly figured. All Mesquite will continue to oxidize until it reaches a rich brown. The pen pictured is about 2 years old. I use it everyday and it continued to darken for about a year after I finished it. The oils in your hands will also cause it to darken. These blanks MAY or MAY NOT achieve the same dark color as the pictured pen. Nowadays you gotta have disclaimer for everything! I can combine up to three (3) orders of 5 blanks in one USPS Flat Rate Priority box.
All of our Mesquite wood is open atmosphere dried - no kilns! Knife scales are available – email me with sizes. I also have a limited quantity of first-run milled pieces of sap and heart wood. Mesquite sap wood is a dull yellow but finishes beautifully.
