WHAT CAN I PRINT ONTO?
Paper or textiles are the most common things to print onto.
Customers have printed lots of lovely items including:
- Tote bags
- Cards and invitations
- Wedding favours
HOW DO I PRINT WITH THESE SCREENS?
It's easy and lots of fun. We send instructions on how to use and care for your screen, but here are the printing basics:
1) Place the screen in position on top of the item you are printing onto.
2) Put a line of ink along one side of the screen, and drag it across the image area with a squeegee.
3) Hold down the surface you are printing onto, and lift up the screen to reveal your print.
HOW DO I SEND THE ARTWORK?
Start a convo to our shop and attach black & white artwork of the image you want to print to your message. Confirm the exact size you need the image to print, and tell us what you'll be printing onto. You can do this before buying the item if you like, to get advice on your artwork. Make sure the image is high res (300 dpi is perfect), good contrast black & white with no grey tones.
Please note we can only make screens from images that you have the COPYRIGHT for.
Sizes listed are for the MAXIMUM IMAGE SIZE (not frame size), so choose the one that matches the size you want to print your image. The plastic frames are approx 10-15cm wider and longer than than the size you select.
WHICH MESH GRADE WILL YOU USE?
I choose 70 mesh quality for printing on textiles, and 70 or 120 for screen printing onto paper or card. The higher the mesh count, the finer the detail that can be kept in your prints. Finer mesh can block more quickly though if you leave ink drying on your screen. The 120 mesh is more delicate than the 70 mesh. It helps me to know how you intend to use your thermofax screen, but usually I will choose based on your image detail.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
Normal turn around is within a week from receipt of payment and approved artwork. I'm in the UK and use Royal Mail for large screens being sent worldwide, and Hermes (2-4 days) for the UK. Royal Mail estimates 5-7 working days for delivery to Australia and around 5 working days for delivery to the US.
WHAT SUPPLIES WILL I NEED?
You'll need fabric ink (e.g. Permaset or Speedball) if you want to print onto t-shirts, tote bags and textiles, or buy paper ink (e.g. Permaprint or System 3 mixed with printing medium) to print onto paper or card. Fabric ink works fine on paper too, but can be more expensive.
For the squeegee - something like a credit card will do.
Rubber tipped squeegees are available in the Printed Wonders shop here:
CAN YOU MAKE LARGER SCREENS?
This system works well for artwork up to approx A4 in size (21.0 x 29.7cm, or 8.27 x 11.69 inches). We don't offer larger screens than stated as the plastic frames would be too floppy. It is easier to work with traditional screen printing frames made of wood or metal for larger work, and we are unable to supply these. Try searching for a local printmaking studio that can make up photo stencils from your artwork.
ARE THESE MADE LIKE REGULAR SILK SCREENS?
No, these screens are made with Japanese Riso mesh using a heat sensitive film rather than photo emulsion to make the stencil. They don't require the large heavy frames and squeegees of traditional style screen printing. They aren't designed for long term heavy commercial use as the stencil film is delicate, but with careful cleaning we have used ours hundreds of times and they have lasted for years.
We use a Screenfax machine to expose your black & white artwork to a bright flash of light and heat, and the stencil is made instantly. The process uses the same materials as 'Thermofax' or 'Print Gocco' machines, but with a Screenfax we are able to offer more grades of mesh quality and it is possible to make stencils that print larger flat shapes as well as line art.
