This is a drop spindle with a flame maple whorl. My husband makes these spindles by hand turning locally found wood. This spindle is made from flame maple. It has a light oil finish that displays the beauty of the wood while protecting it and a sturdy metal hook. This spindle weighs 1 ounce. The whorl measures 2 1/4 inches across. The overall length of the spindle is 9 inches. I try each spindle out to make sure it spins wonderfully. This beautiful spindle would be work well for a beginner to advanced spinner. I also include an ounce of wool roving with each spindle to practice with.
Drop spindles have been used since ancient times to make yarn. They are wonderfully portable and a great way of getting into the craft of yarn making.
