CISTUS LADANIFER 'GUM CISTUS'

Cistaceae: an evergreen shrub to 1.5m, with a loose open habit. Found in pine woods, copses and on dry usually granitic hills. The flowers are white with a deep red blotch at the base of each petal, and 10cm across. Blooming from June-July. The leaves are evergreen, very sticky, narrow, aromatic leaves, dark green above, and grey beneath. Native to South Western Europe – North Africa.

USES:

The seeds can be ground into a powder and used with cereal flours in making cakes and breads. An oleo-resin obtained from the leaves and stems is eaten raw or used as a commercial food flavouring in baked goods, ice cream, and chewing gum.
Labdanum has aromatic, expectorant, stimulant, controls bleeding and antibiotic properties. It is used internally in the treatment of catarrh and diarrhoea and as an emmenagogue.

The glandular hairs on the leaves yield the oleo-resin 'ladanum', used medicinally and in soaps, perfumery, and fumigation. The resin has been used as substitute for ambergris.

GROWING INFORMATION:

Surface sow seeds. The seed usually germinates in 1-4 weeks at 20°C. Prick out the seedlings as soon as they are large enough to handle into individual pots. Grow them on in the greenhouse for their first winter and plant them out the in the following spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. The seed stores well for at least 3 years. Requires a sunny position in a well-drained light sandy soil, growing well in poor soils. Resents root disturbance. Plants are hardy to about -10°C, but they require protection in severe winters. Plants are somewhat hardier when grown in poor soils.
