Item details

The Madrone Tree (Arbutus unedo) is also called Strawberry Tree in most areas of the Southwest. It is a highly prized addition to the Landscape...Hardy, Easy to Grow, and Honey Bee and Butterfly Magnet!

Madrone (Arbutus unedo) makes an amazing and unique contribution to the Landscape...whether in the Residential Garden or a Wildlife Restoration. It has become very difficult to find in the market.

A Bit of Plant Culture...

This Madrone Tree is not a hybrid plant. It is native to parts of Europe from Southern Spain through to Ireland. In Ireland, the Madrone is more often called Killarney Tree and in Portugal, it is called Cane Apple. It is often called Strawberry Tree because of the Small, Red Strawberry Colored Fruit.

This Evergreen Shrub or Small Tree is well adapted to growing in the Southwestern US. It is ideally appropriate for Full Sun, Dry or Xeric Garden and once established, the Madrone is Drought Tolerant.

The Madrone is easy to grow in the Landscape and is very tolerant of multiple types of soils including limestone and clay soils. This Madrone is classed as Slow-growing and routinely reaches 15 to 20' tall and can span from 8 to 15' across. It
is a Cold Hardy Plant in USDA Zone 7b through 9.

Because it is slow-growing, this Madrone is an excellent candidate for Container Gardening out of zone. It is also well adapted for Bonsai Art with 1.5 to 2" leaf size.

During the Spring, small blooms attract multiple species of Bees including Honey Bees and Bumble Bees....and several species of Butterflies including Swallowtails. The Berry production feeds several Songbirds and Cardinals, Blue Jays and several species of Doves.

Like the other Madrones that we raise, both the Marina Madrone and Compacta (Dwarf Variety) Madrone have been nicknamed the Strawberry Tree because of the Red Strawberry-shaped Berries that the Tree produces in the Fall.

The Berries are edible and are making a comeback in the US as Permaculture Fruit. While eating the berries is not harmful, the taste is acquired!

Fall Color is an Umber to Red Coloration as older leaves fall to make way for new shiny green foliage. This is our favorite time of year for the Madrone because of the multi-coloration in the foliage...red, orange, yellow tones intermixed with bright green new foliage..

The trunk and limbs are a bright orange, red and auburn peeling bark throughout the year and create a unique Landscape Feature.....Madrone Trees provide four-season interest in the landscape.

Madrones of all types are Stunning Contributions to any Landscape and yet they are very rare in nurseries and seldom found.

Packaging and Shipping...

All of our plants are Organically Grown and Chemical Free.

The Madrones offered are now second and third-year plants growing in 9" Deep Pots with well-developed root structures.

This size of Madrone plant can be planted directly into the landscape, planted into a large container, or used as an element in Bonsai Art!

Top-foliage averages 6 to 14" and several of the plants have naturally bending and twisting trunks. Several are even branching....all characteristic of the species.

Excess soil will be removed from the root system. Roots will be encased in dampened materials to retain moisture and the root systems will then be securely protected in plastic.

Each plant is labeled with common and botanical names.

We ship in the Order of Paid Invoices...and while our goal is prompt shipment of all orders. However shipping delays can occur during period of High Sales (Spring Planting and Christmas) or due to periods of Severe Weather. We routinely do not ship some plants during the Heat of August. If in doubt as to the specific shipping date of the items you purchased, please send us a note!...

We welcome your messages or special requests. We attempt to respond to all messages promptly...sometimes, the response requires a bit of time to research.

Our Growing Philosophy....We propagate through seedlings, cuttings, and division of well-established plants. We do not use chemicals and allow the plant to establish root systems naturally. This may - or may not - create a smaller plant or a longer growing period than the 'Treated with Nitrogen' plants visible at Big Box Stores.

We do not grow hundreds of any one plant, but prefer to grow hundreds of different plants instead...Numbers of plants are often limited.

We offer many native varieties because we like them and strongly believe that the Heritage of Natives should be retained. We Never collect them from the wild. We grow them from cuttings or seeds from our own Garden and Property.

We ship with excess soil removed from the root system. The roots are wrapped in dampened materials and securely encased in plastic. Each plant is labeled as to the common and botanical names. We ship USPS. We have been using this method for more than 30 years and have found it to be highly reliable...

We routinely ship Plant Materials within the Continental USA. Alaska, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands require additional shipping costs...and we will create a Designated Listing for your additional shipping and handling costs.

We can not replace or refund Plant, Seed or Cutting material that has been confiscated by a governmental agency...regardless of the reason. We can no longer maintain current information on State Regulations for Live Plant Shipment. It is the Buyer's Responsibility to know when a plant is considered "non-shippable" into their state.

Due to USDA regulations, we ship no plants, seeds, or cuttings to Hawaii.

You do not have to be home to receive your package as we do not require signatures. Neither do we mark the boxes with the contents because this gives the US Postal Service the option of non-delivery if no-one is home.

As soon as the plants have been packed and shipped, the buyer is provided with the Label or Tracking Number. we do follow tracking on our shipped items and consider the sale complete when the Tracking Information indicates the package/box was delivered safely by USPS.

Each Plant Sale is unique for us! Each is hand-inspected and hand-packed for shipment. We do not 'anticipate' shipping or purchase the Shipping Label in advance of Shipment. We carry each box to the United States Post Office for shipment to ensure prompt scanning and shipment...and routinely make trips to the Belton Post Office three days a week.

We are shipping a growing number of Fairy Garden Miniatures and Whimsey Internationally when requested. We have had great success with shipping to the United Kingdom, Iceland, France and Australia. Additional shipping costs may/are required.

Our goal is Assist in Growing Your Garden...as well as Ours!

Cultural Growing Information...Please ask us if you would like cultural or growing information and we will gladly respond electronically. We will happily oblige upon request ONLY! We do not include growing instructions or invoice in your shipment.
