Item details

This pineapple brass drawer pull or door knob will provide the perfect home decor detail for those who love the tropical look.

A lot less prickly than the real thing, it's made in Indonesia with an antique-look finish.

It's a solid, textured piece of cabinet hardware that you'll delight in each time you open the drawer or cupboard door that it graces.

You can see a back view of the piece, with a screw for attachment and its housing, in my fourth photo. Hover the cursor over the listing photo and click the left or right arrow to scroll through the images.

BACK STORY
Tropical fruits are in bountiful supply in Bali, and it's just as well because they are used abundantly in ritual offerings to the gods on the predominantly Hindu island.

Towers of fruit and cakes sit beautifully balanced atop the heads of women clad in equally colourful sarong and kebaya as they make their way gracefully to and from the temple for major ceremonial occasions - just one of the many breathtaking scenes you'll see if you are lucky enough to visit Bali.

In case you've ever wondered how all those apples and oranges and salak (snakefruit) and mangosteens and pineapples stay in place, each piece is securely skewered to the trunk of a young banana tree that sits at the core of the arrangement, known as gebogan.

Poise is what keeps it all in perfect place on the head of each woman. At the temple, a pemangku (priest) sprinkles these offerings with holy water to ceremonially remove any impurities.

In prayer, the priest and the bearers offer the essence of these arrangements to the gods and deified ancestors. Once their sari or function has been fulfilled, the fruit and cakes are taken back on the heads of the women, and shared with family and friends.

It's a wonderful coincidence that the gods love these fruits and cakes just as much as the Balinese do.

In Bahasa Indonesia, the word for fruit is buah, and the word for pineapple is nanas.
