FOR THE STORY OF THIS COTTON: Khadi cotton is spun on a spinning wheel called charkha. It is a versatile fabric, cool in summer and warm in winter. For the Indians, khādī has a strong sentimental value. He is often associated with Mahatma Gandhi. Someone said "the first true Indian designer was Mahatma Gandhi, because of his call to the Indians to wear clothes in khādī". Gandhi's appeal was caused by the need to teach the Indians to rely on themselves, and to prove to the English the unity of India. The khādī also symbolized the need and importance of indigenous manufactured goods, as well as India's resistance to colonial power. As a result, the khādī has acquired an identity meaning (Wikipedia source).
