Hand spun 2 ply natural Banana vegan fiber Spin Flora vegan yarn that has been hand dyed with Weld natural dye. The banana plant has been cultivated in Japan since the 13th Century for use in making fabrics and textiles. The tender shoots of the banana plant were harvested and boiled in lye to soften them. The banana fibre was spun into yarn and woven for making kimono and kamishimo. In Nepal, the trunk of the banana plant was used instead of the shoots. The aged bark or outer layers were soaked in water and allowed to decay to dissolve the chlorofyll leaving the cellulose fibres that are softened into a pulp. The pulp is dried and spun into yarn. Banana is a strong fibre with a shiny appearance. Banana is a light weight fibre with high moisture absorption as well as quick moisture release, so banana fibre dries quickly. Banana fiber is bio-degradable and has no negative impact on the environment. With the recent invention of banana fiber extraction machines, banana fibre waste can now be processed into high quality silk grade fibres that are now readily available to handspinners, weavers and crafters.
Banana fiber yarns are not as soft as some of the other viscose plant fibers so would be best for projects such as knitted or crocheted bags or where you wish to use a more hard wearing type of yarn.
Yarns that are dyed with natural plants is a slow process and not to be hurried. First the dye plant needs to be soaked and softened to dissolve and release the dye pigments from the plant. Sometimes this is done by heating and soaking the leaves, stems or roots overnight, sometimes by adding alcohol to dissolve the dye pigment, and sometimes by natural fermentation. The yarn or fiber has to go through a process of mordanting in a solution such as alum, to prepare the yarn to be able to absorb the dye colour. After the mordanting process, then the yarn is simmered or soaked in the dye stock solution for several hours or overnight in the dye solution to absorb the colour. Once the desired colour has been achieved, the dyed yarn is then carefully rinsed and washed to remove any excess dye pigment and then left to dry.
