Fingering weight hand spun, natural Seacell vegan flora fiber yarn dyed to a soft shade of pink/peach with natural avocado skins Seacell fiber is a combination of a cellulose-based fibre, ground seaweed and silver. The addition of the seaweed gives the fibre increased antibacterial and fungicidal effects. The Seacell fibre is very soft, luxurious and a delight to knit or crochet, much like knitting with silk.
Spin Flora handspun Seacell yarns can be dyed with natural plant dyes and mordants or other dyes suitable for cellulose fibres.
Yarns that are dyed with natural plants is a slow process and not to be hurried. First the dye plant needs to be soaked and softened to dissolve and release the dye pigments from the plant. Sometimes this is done by heating and soaking the leaves, stems or roots overnight, sometimes by adding alcohol to dissolve the dye pigment, and sometimes by natural fermentation. The yarn or fiber has to go through a process of mordanting in a solution such as alum, to prepare the yarn to be able to absorb the dye colour. After the mordanting process, then the yarn is simmered or soaked in the dye stock solution for several hours or overnight in the dye solution to absorb the colour. Once the desired colour has been achieved, the dyed yarn is then carefully rinsed and washed to remove any excess dye pigment and then left to dry.
