Antique French Lace Maker's Lace Making Pillow from the turn of the century, France. This pillow is hand made and constructed with a wooden frame which has been covered in fabric with added trim at top and around drum. The drum is also made of wood which has been paper then covered in matching green cloth. The "pricking" or lace pattern is stilled fastened to drum with straight pins.
Under the trim and around the edges, it is easy to note that there has been some fading to the fabric. It was originally a darker green. Now the fabric covering is olive green. Obviously used to make lace, this pillow is still in good condition. There is a moisture stain on the back, and some rust where the pins held the fabric in place.
I have seen several antique post cards showing women sitting in rows of threes and fours with lace making pillows in their laces making lace. Most of these post card date to the late 1800's or early 1900's. Also, in Le Puy en Velay, lace making capital of France, I have seen demonstrations of lace-making in progress. The demonstrator was a man who said that his mother and grandmother had taught him to make lace using lace making pillows. Le Puy en Velay has many lace making shops with lace, pillows and bobbins offered for sale.
At shows, I have sold many, many lace making bobbins to crafters. One or two people in ten years have told me they have learned to make bobbin lace using pillows like these. Bobbin lace--a dying art yet revived by some lace making guilds.
