Item details

These 'Primitive Paints' are exclusively designed here in the Willow Cabin studio. Inspired by my love of natural products I have been making and using my own paints for many years, primarily stored in shells (inspired by ancient paint makers). A waterproof epoxy/terracotta outer coats the shells to keep them level during use and to also serve as a barrier between paints avoiding cross contamination. The outer measurements are between 2.5cm to 3cm in diameter (actual shell is around 1.5cm x 2cm).
All paints are made with highest quality French and Italian pigments, bound and ground with natural, historically accurate ingredients (honey for moisture absorption and gum arabic for transparency and flow) and left to set for at least 10 days to ensure they are safe for transport. Please allow up to 10 days for these to be hand made/set on top of posting time.

Set of 10 colours:
- TITANIUM WHITE, *** O: Titanium White came into use around 1915 and is a dense opaque colour well suited for highlights and illustrative white details though appear a little misty/chalky in mixed washes.
- PRIMARY YELLOW ** S/O: An intense tinted yellow with stable qualities.
- PRIMARY RED, *** S/O: A vibrant primary red with a pinkish hue. High tinting strength and an essential primary for mixing new colours.
- ULTRAMARINE DEEP, *** T: A bold Lapis Lazuli colour and another 'must have' for artist sets.
- CERULEAN BLUE HUE, *** S/O: No set is complete without gorgeous cerulean blue. This cerulean is very intense and beautiful.
- GREEN EARTH, *** T: This natural earth creates a soft, pale sage-like green. It handles a little differently to the other earth pigments requiring a little extra mixing on a palette before use. Works nicely with white and creates some interesting pastels mixed with other colours.
- YELLOW OCHRE,*** T: A natural clay based pigment with a warm golden tone. Used since ancient times and still seen in tribal art around the world. A personal favourite!
- BURNT SIENNA, *** T: A natural earth pigment consisting of iron oxide and manganese oxide. Through a process of heating it turns a beautiful rust-brown colour.
- BURNT UMBER, *** S/O: Natural raw umber that is heated to produce a lighter, warmer colour than its original.
- IVORY BLACK, *** O: A warm ivory black made with ground natural carbon.

(PLEASE NOTE the colour chart, wooden box, powder jars and paintbrush are for display purposes only)

- I only produce small quantities of each colour at any one time so there may be very slight variations between batches. Each colour has their own character and requires a somewhat adjusted recipe so some will appear slightly glossier, dried, smoother, more granular etc. than each other.
- Many of the paints (especially the earths) will likely show a few tiny air holes caused by air escaping from the paint after being poured into the shell containers. This is nothing to worry about and does not affect use of the paints as once in use they will regain a smoother surface.
- There will be small variations in shell size.
- Remember, a little goes a long way. These are quite concentrated paints so if you are using them in thin washes a pan can last you a long time ... if not years in some cases depending on scale and volume of work.
- Note: Due to the honey which is added these paints will not appear completely dry when you first receive them... they are likely to be a little springy to the touch. Honey helps prevent/lessen cracking and crumbling in paints and means they are very easy to re-wet. Shells are filled and levelled to the top but as they dry some the moisture evaporates solidifying the paints somewhat and causing a visual dip in the centre.
- Do not store in full sun for extended periods of time or in damp, humid conditions as this will cause paints to revert to liquid form. Always allow your paints to air dry before packing them away.

GRANULATION: Granulation is something which tends to happen more often in higher end paints as they contain a much higher ratio of pigment without fillers. Certain colours are more prone to granulation than others because the density of the pigment is higher than that of the binder it's suspended in. This causes the pigments to settle in pools rather than an even, flat wash. Some artists love this effect due to its natural feel, others not so much. It depends on your style of work and personal preference.
Earth/clay browns are especially prone to granulation.

OPACITY: the more opaque the paint the harder it is to layer colours over each other (e.g. glazing/washes). If you are after blocky bold colours without layers then a more opaque paint is for you. Most watercolourists look for a transparent or semi-opaque colour which allows you to add rich depth of tones through applying thin layers (also known as glazing or washes).
KEY: T = Transparent S/O = Semi Opaque O = Opaque

LIGHT FASTNESS: This is a measure of how the pigments react over time against general light damage. Cheaper pigments which do not have good light fastness can fade quickly.
KEY: ** = Good LF *** = Excellent LF
