Item details

Made by Peter Swarz-Burt, our wootz-producing smith here at Dragon's Breath Forge, this one of a kind spiked axe is a stunning piece of weaponry. The wootz used in the forging of this axe head has a depth of pattern, at some angles looking swirly and at others looking sparkly. This is somewhat conveyed in the photos of the blade.

Putting the pattern aside, this axe is a heavy, capable chopper and has been sharpened to a razor edge. It will make short work of anything that gets in its way. The blackened hickory tomahawk handle is a durable and flexible choice - if the buyer chooses to use this axe as a target thrower, the handle can easily be replaced when the inevitable nicks and dents to the shaft become unsightly.

Wootz is a small-batch crucible steel that attained near-mythical status in much of the world up to the Industrial Revolution. The pattern visible on the surface is caused by the banding of carbides, and this same banding is responsible for the unique performance characteristics of the material. All of our wootz is made right here in our shop, starting with raw materials, melting them in a crucible, and then forging them out into high-performance knives and other custom items. Our wootz blades are heat-treated based on modern metallurgical knowledge, and that allows this ancient material to perform with the best of the modern steels.
