There are times in my stone cutting where I am just simply overwhelmed by what I find when I cut into stones. To be the first person to cast eyes upon something so beautiful in nature that was previously hidden... It’s truly beyond words. It’s an honored gift to be offered that discovery, and to be entrusted by nature to bring it out into the world and highlight it with your skill and talent is humbling and sometimes a bit scary. I received a few kilos of Orpheus Agate from Bulgaria recently and began slicing into some of the large greenish brown rocks. The second one I sliced into revealed one of those moments. One of those insanely rare times where everything I knew about the material changed in a moment and I fell in love with what I do all over again. This is one of the very few stones I’ve cut from that material, and I couldn’t be happier with the result. I've cut a lot of Orpheus Agate before, but my eyes popped when I saw the bright reddish orange color in the banding and the plumes, not to mention that the greens in this piece are more vibrant than any other Orpheus Agate I've ever seen. It took a great polish and this one has a fantastic sparkling quartz center. I couldn't ask for more! There are perhaps many stones that I’ve cut over the years that may be more beautiful from a novice point of view, but it is the insane rarity and unexpectedness of this one is that makes it beyond words. This large one-of-a-kind stone definitely deserves to be showcased, whether in jewelry or in a collector’s display!
Bulgarian Orpheus Agate Designer Cut Cabochon
39.1 x 31.1 x 5.9mm
I cut this cab by hand and it's been polished to a high sheen both front and back with slightly rounded bottom edges for easy setting.
This rare agate comes from Kardzhali - Bulgaria. In 2004 the Agate exhibition in Munich found that Orpheus agate is unique in the world. Named after the ancient legendary Greek musical hero who frolicked in the area where the deposit is located. This unusual and rare stone from Bulgaria can be comprised of many layers of beautiful green Seladonit and golden yellow/brown jasper with some pockets of clear agate, with, on rare occasions, beautiful plumes within the clear agate.
