Pietersite is a rare dark blue-grey or reddish breccia aggregate (rock made up of fragments embedded in a matrix), comprised mostly of hawk's eye and tiger's eye. Pietersite from Namibia was first discovered in 1962 by Sid Pieters, thus it was named in his honor. The term "pietersite" is now used as a general term to describe brecciated tiger's eye.
Pietersite is characterized by its distinctive swirls or streaks of blue, gold or orange, due to the crocidolite inclusions within a microcrystalline silica host. Crocidolite is the same material responsible for tiger's eye chatoyancy. When polished, the inclusions in pietersite exhibit chaotic chatoyancy whereas in tiger's eye, the inclusions are arranged in parallel lines and give the appearance of a continuous line.
This slab is African pietersite. African pietersite is the most sought after pietersite due to its wide range of colors. Colors include various blues, golds and reds that may appear together or alone. Blue is the rarest color, followed by red. The blues range from a baby blue to dark midnight hue. Golds can be light to very deep and rich, sometimes having a reddish hue. All fibrous color variations will have a superb and striking chatoyancy, the bright and subtly changing shimmer of color that moves along the surface of a gemstone as it is viewed from varying angles.
The Crocidolite variety is a type of asbestos and is sometimes also referred to as "blue asbestos” Note that sometimes in pietersite specimens not all of the crocidolite becomes incased by quartz during the transformation process and remain as loose fibers still attached to the main stone. Appropriate care should be addressed when cutting, trimming, and grinding.
As with all stones, natural fissures can be present. These fissures should be inspected prior to cutting, trimming, and shaping. Stabilizing fissures with clear Opiticon jewelers epoxy may be considered.
Pietersite is sometimes referred to as "the tempest stone", possibly because of its stormy appearance. It is thought to possess a highly-charged energy that enhances focus and personal will. Pietersite is said to provide protection from the elements and encourage calmness. It is believed that pietersite can help to cure addiction and boost self-confidence. Physically, pietersite is thought to balance the hormones, blood pressure and body temperature.
