Mexican Sunflower / Bolivian Sunflower - Tithonia diversifolia Fresh Cuttings for Propagation - sterile
This purchase includes TEN (10) fresh cuttings of Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia diversifola) with FREE FIRST CLASS SHIPPING and TRACKING SERVICE!
(Tithonia diversifolia) - Also referred to as Bolivian Sunflower
The cuttings each measure approximately 6+ inches in length and are harvested fresh following your purchase. These cuttings are stripped of most (or all) of their primary leaves to minimize drying out (through foliar desiccation) and are packaged to protect them during transit. Once they arrive, I strongly suggest planting them in a good quality moist soil, and placed in a mostly shady area until new growth forms. Place about 3/4 of the plant straight down into soil with the ANGLED CUT POINTED UPWARD (see image) and maintain moderate moisture levels. Some slight browning may occur in the cutting, which is to be expected. The growth potential lies in the primary stem which will push out new growth once the cuttings have rooted in soil. Once you see that new growth, you can put them in the partly sunny, to full sun locations they most desire!
Mexican Sunflower Info
Mexican Sunflower is well known for their beautiful yellow flowers which have a wonderful honey smell, many excellent uses, and incredibly rapid growth. We honestly see Mexican Sunflower as one of our absolute essentials in our food forest. Mexican sunflower is a powerhouse in food forests for chop & drop technique to create a very rapid growing green-mulch (and later soil) which helps to retain soil moisture and health. Sometimes called the "Comfrey of the South" since it uptakes much of the same soil mineral profile as comfrey. Additionally, mature plants also have the fabulous ability to uptake the illustrious phosphorus from the soil, eventually making it readily available, creating a symbiotic relationship of nutrient and mineral exchange with surrounding plants.
On the topic of soil health, we use the thicker branches of Tithonia diversifolia that are too large for chop & drop processes, instead to create biochar, a very useful component in creating a "living soil" rich in carbon and allowing permeability for water retention harboring mycorrhizal fungi and other microscopic life that is essential in soil development and nutrient accumulation and breakdown processes.
Besides the aforementioned benefits, Tithonia diversifiolia also provides shade in extreme conditions of heavy sun exposure. Those beautiful flowers also attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Unfortunately, no parts of this plant are edible for humans. Although I have heard several reports of it being a desired fodder for goats and rabbits.
Other notes about this plant:
Mexican Sunflower / Bolivian Sunflower grows incredibly fast during the Spring and Summer months, and viable cuttings (like what we provide) will root very easily! I typically have to cut back our plants every couple of weeks to keep them in check so they don't completely shade out other surrounding plants. There is a level of responsibility that comes with having this plant in your system as it can get out of control if not cut-back on occasion! Fortunately, all that cut-back is literally food for your other plants!
This is a highly sought after STERILE variety that is purportedly only able to be propagated through cuttings! The seeds will not produce new plants that would allow this variety to spread to undesirable locations. (Up to this point in time, I can vouch for that claim.)
