These roselles contain the seeds of our own organically grown hibiscus plants (Hibiscus sabdariffa). The plants grow during the summer, with the flowering beginning in late summer. The flowers and roselles can be harvested in late summer through autumn, until the cold weather returns.
The fruits can be used fresh for making wine, juice, jam, jelly, syrup, and brewed into tea. They possess pectin which helps to make a beautiful and firm jelly.
The hibiscus roselles, Hibiscus sabdariffa, contain high level of antioxidants, including flavonoids, gossypetine, hibiscetine and sabdaretine. The fresh calyces are also rich in riboflavin, ascorbic acid, niacin, caroten, calcium, and iron. Once harvested, the calyces (sometimes referred to as roselles) can be used to make a tasty and healthy tea. This tea is sometimes referred to as Lemon Zinger Tea.
It is an annual plant that grows to about four to five feet in height and width here in South Louisiana. We had abundant flowers starting in August until our first freeze in December.
The seeds are allowed to release from each seed pod. They are then tested by me to be fully ripened and mature. These are then separated from the rest of the seeds, which are discarded. It is very important to me to do this testing before the seeds are packaged for my customers.
This listing is for 20 seeds of hibiscus sabdariffa from our 2017 crop. Each seed is tested my me for viability. My customers are usually very pleased.
