Item details

The Horns Hand Gesture Carved Bone Pendant Bead, about 25mm long, bears a sign well known to fans of heavy metal and hard rock music.

Carved all around and vertically drilled through the wrist, it features the extended index and little fingers flanking the middle and ring fingers that are held down by the thumb.

You could expect to see a sea of hands held in this way at an AC/DC concert, for example, so this pendant might make a great gift for a fan of the aforementioned music genres.

It's also a gesture used by Italians and some other Mediterranean cultures to ward off bad luck, or the "evil eye" (malocchio), so this piece could be used as a talisman.

It's also a ritualistic religious symbol - the Karana mudra of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism. In these beliefs, it's used to keep curses and negative thoughts away.

No offense is intended to other cultures in which the gesture may be considered offensive.

If you happen to be in Bali, Indonesia, where this piece was crafted, and you ask a bunch of kids to pose for a photo, you can also expect to see this gesture used in proliferation, just as it would be at a music concert.

This listing is for one piece only. Macro photography enhances some of the small imperfections that are not as visible when you're looking at one of these in your hand.

The sign of the horns hand gesture has been around since the late 60s, and used by everyone from Jinx Dawson - lead singer of American psychedelic-occult rock band Coven - to John Lennon, Frank Zappa, and Gene Simmons.

Ronnie James Dio popularized it in heavy metal music after replacing Ozzie Osborne as Black Sabbath's front man in 1979. Osborne had famously used the peace sign, but rather than copy him directly, Dio chose a hand gesture that he said was used by his Italian grandmother.

Metal music is very popular throughout Indonesia and so the hand gesture is widely used by adults and children alike, especially whenever a camera comes out.

The word for hand in Bahasa Indonesia is 'tangan'.
It's a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll. ~ AC/DC
