Item details

African Painted dogs are beautiful animals that live in the plains of Africa. These animals are very clever and work as a team to bring down large prey with a higher success rate than even wolves. They may be ferocious in real life, but now you can make your very own version—just a bit smaller and gentler! Once you get used to the color changing, these dogs can be knitted up fairly quickly, so you can knit yourself a whole pack of these gentle knitted versions.

This is a knitting pattern only. If you would like to have the finished animal, please see my shop on Etsy.

Finished dog measures about 6" long by 6" tall. His eyes, head stripe, and nose are all embroidered on. I like using Caron's Simply Soft yarn for my animals, but any four-ply yarn will do. You need it in yellow, brown, and white. Size 4mm knitting needles are required, as is a yarn needle, polyester fiberfill, and pipe cleaners for the legs.

Please note that this pattern is NOT for beginners. A full understanding of stranding is necessary for making this pattern. Standing (often incorrectly called intarsia) is a technique of color changing in knitting, and requires carrying the currently unused-color yarn be carried behind the colored yarn you are using at that moment. Also, a basic understanding of loopy stitch will be useful in knitting the tail of this dog. Some good tutorials on this subject can be found online. All loopy stitches use the one-finger loop length.

This pattern is designed by me. Please do not sell this pattern or the finished product online. You may sell them for charity events (not online) or give them to someone special in your life :)

FAQs

Sure! Just send me a message explaining exactly what you want, and I'll do my best to accommadate you. Be aware that I may not be able to make everything you ask for (eg. dogs with very complicated markings), but I will always see what I can do.

If you are wondering if the sizes of the dogs are all the same, unfortunately, they are not, though they are similar. The black labrador, for example, is slightly bigger than the yellow lab due to yarn weight. And the labradoodle is the smallest of the dogs, because she is knitted with thinner yarn in order to give her a curly texture. All greeting cards are approximately 6.75"x4.75". The dimensions of my dragons vary; usually they are at least a foot long to about 18". All items have their dimensions listed; please message me with any other questions about it :)

My knitted dogs should not be machine-washed. If necessary, gently hand-wash the dog, being careful to avoid the legs, as the pipe cleaner wire could rust if exposed to too much water. Any animal that is made with fake fur can be gently groomed with a soft-bristled brush to smooth out the fur. I would recommend hand-washing only, but machine washing and air-drying will probably work just fine. Please do not tumble-dry, or if you must, use a very low setting. Fleece items can be machine-washed and dried, unless they contain wires (ex. Wired legs or wings in dragons and cats).
