CHAYA / MAYAN TREE SPINACH
( Cnidoscolus aconitifolius ) or ( Cnidoscolus chayamansa ) - Variety "Estrella"
This purchase includes Five (5) fresh cuttings of Chaya (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius) with FREE FIRST CLASS SHIPPING and TRACKING SERVICE! The cuttings are harvested fresh at time of purchase and are cut to fit within the shipping package (approximately 6+ inches in length). The cuttings include both old/hardwood cuttings and some newer growth cuttings. This is one of the simplest plants to get established! Seriously!
NOTICE: We offer larger quantity Chaya kits (15 cuttings) for only a few dollars more. Please see our shop.
This particular variety is known as "Estrella" a cultivar most desired for consumption, with great growth rates. (NOTICE: Do not eat raw. Please do your research on Chaya! It must be cooked prior to consumption) The thick, broad leaves DO NOT contain the tiny stinging hairs found on other varieties. After trying them all, this was the one I was most happy with and decided to grow in great abundance in my residential food forest.
You will receive items very similar to the ones pictured, but not those exact items.
GROWING / ROOTING TIPS and SUGGESTIONS
When your cuttings arrive, they will have angled cuts on one end, and flat cuts on the other end. Please plant your cuttings with the angled side pointed upward (out of the soil). Please see the last photo in the listing!
Rooting Chaya is very easy and requires some moderately moist to nearly dry soil to start. Please keep in mind that Chaya is a succulent (like a cactus). Once the cuttings have established, UNDER-watering is likely PREFERABLE to over-watering!
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ROOT THEM DIRECTLY IN WATER!! They WILL rot and die rapidly using this method. Period! Signs of rotting or soggy and squishy cuttings are signs that you have them in too much water. If you can firmly squeeze a handful of your soil and water drips... it's far too moist!
Succulents, including Chaya are excellent at storing water in their tissues, so a short period of very dry soil doesn't harm them. On many occasions, I have successfully rooted cuttings that were sitting in a completely neglected pile of scraps for over 6 months!
ONCE ESTABLISHED, Chaya does desire some attributes of a tropical to semi-tropical environment, such as high heat, maximum sun exposure, and elevated humidity on occasion. In environments where you can offer those attributes is where you will have the highest and most productive plants.
Cold Weather Environments
We have heard of customers successfully growing productive chaya plants in locations as far North as New York with some special attention! Chaya is a hearty perennial in Tropical environments. In Temperate environments where Winters sustain below freezing temperatures, chaya is treated more like an annual with their productive season being in Spring and Summer. Outdoor plants will certainly die back in freezing temperatures, so it is suggested that you start and root cuttings from the mother plant(s) when they are in their peak of production during late Summer. During late Fall and Winter, place those plants or cuttings indoors in a sunny location like a window or in a greenhouse until the following Spring growing season.
COLD SEASON PURCHASES (FALL & WINTER) I get a lot of questions regarding whether or not chaya will grow in Winter. It will not grow productively (outside) during winter unless you're in USDA Zone 10b and warmer, BUT... in temperate regions, indoors or in climate controlled situations it will establish a healthy root system and sustain through the season getting you a jumpstart on the growing season with well established plants to eventually plant outside after last frost.
