2 ANN Buttons - American Notions and Novelties Company - Wood Composite -Blue with Dark Red Center - Flower Shaped Buttons - Early 1900's
Please indulge me as I share the information I discovered about these unique buttons. They were manufactured by the American Notions and Novelties Company. Very little information is available about this company. They usually marked their buttons ANN on the backs. The buttons are made with a wood composite very similar to Syroco or Burwood. These companies produced this type of button around 1918 through 1930. The wood composite could be molded into many shapes, made to look like carved wood or even painted with metallic paints. They are often confused with other types of old buttons because they mimicked them so well!
This pair of buttons are marked ANN. It is tiny and faint, but it is the same mark as other ANN buttons. They measure approximately 1 3/8 inches or 36 mm across. They are shaped like flowers and are painted a cornflower blue with metallic gold details. The center accent piece is deep red and shaped like a bullet or rocket. The red 'stone' protrudes out from the flower. The blue portion is about 5/16 to 3/8 inch deep (7 to 9 mm) and with the red accent they are about 5/8 inch deep or 16 mm, not including the metal shank.
**One button is in nicer condition than the other. They both have some minor worn spots, but one has a little chunk missing. **
American Notions and Novelties Company frequently added embellishments to there buttons, like these red 'stones'. Many of them have not survived the years intact. Both of these buttons have their original decorations with no signs of repair or damage.
This is a pretty unique and fun button set! They are fragile, approaching 100 years old, so I do not recommend using these as actual clothing buttons! They are for collecting, displaying or even as part of an amazing art project. Enjoy!
****** I am going to be listing several lots of buttons. If you are interested in multiples, please message me and I can adjust the shipping.
