The Story of Ammolite - 70+ Million Years in the Making:

Ammolite is an opal-like organic gemstone found primarily along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta. It is made of the fossilized shells of ammonites and was given official gemstone status in 1981. While ammonites are found all over the world, only in a small area known as the Bearpaw Formation have the ammonite shells been fossilizes into gem-quality ammolite, making it very rare.

Two companies operate Ammolite mines; Aurora Ammolite Mine and Korite International. Korite's marketing materials report that they produce over 90% of the world's supply of Ammolite. These mines produce ammolite that are finished stones, ready for the jewelry market, therefore very little rough ammolite enters the lapidary market for independent jewlery-makers.

Ammolite is neither easily or often imitated and is usually fashioned into free-formed cabochons. It is very delicate and should not be exposed to perfume, alcohol or lotions. Nothing harsher than a mild soap should be used to clean your ammolite; ultrasonic cleaning should be AVOIDED.

FAQs

I love doing custom and personalized orders. I go to gem shows every few months - so I can always look for gemstones for people. I'd love to make your ideas come to life. Let's brainstorm!

I package all items with care to ensure they won't be damaged in the post (boxes, bubble wrap, and tissue to make it look pretty). Ammolite items come with an information sheet, including care instructions. If you are sending a gift to someone and want me to include more information (stating it is dinosaur bone, or which gemstone it is) please let me know and I'll gladly accommodate. I'd be happy to provide gift wrapping and a gift card (same size as a florist card) for special occasions at no additional charge.

I will usually mail orders in 1-2 business days, custom orders will also require "creation time" of a few days. My store policies are ETSY standard policies, worded by ETSY (unable to edit) and may not answer everything you wish to know. Feel free to contact with your inquiry or question anytime. I am usually able to respond within 1 business day.

Ammolite should not be cleaned with anything other than a cloth dipped in warm water and mild soap. It should not come in contact with alcohol (hairspray, perfume, lotions etc.) or excessive moisture. Treat similar to pearls and other delicate gems. Avoid ultrasonic cleaning.
