Stunning 19.3ct Solid freeform Queensland Pipe Opal. Hand cut and polished.

NOTE: This gorgeous stone has a very tiny flaw (possibly a tiny internal fracture) at the very tip of the stone on each end which can only be seen under magnification. It has been priced accordingly.

This is a solid opal mined in Winton, Queensland, Australia. We only sell opal solids (Solid Opals), not doublets, triplets or synthetic opals.

Measurements taken with a ruler at longest, widest & deepest points of the stone are as follows: 30mm long x 12mm wide x approx 7.5mm deep. This is a freeform stone so the depth does vary slightly. Please note that the measurements may not be absolutely pinpoint but are as close to exact as I can get using only a ruler.

Opal can look very different in sunlight than what it does in shade or under artificial lighting and also looks different depending on the angle on which you view it. Generally, opal requires direct sunlight to look its best. We have done our best to display a variety of images with the item being sold in different types of light and on different angles to give a proper overview of each stone. Photos 1-9 were taken in direct and indirect full sun. Photo 10 was taken outside in the shade.

PLEASE NOTE: The photos have been taken with a macro lens which greatly enlarges the item to highlight the fine detail (and any imperfections) in the stone and we do ask that you enlarge the photos and study them carefully as they form part of the description. If you have any questions about a particular opal, feel free to send us a message. Please refer to the photo with the ruler to ascertain the actual size of the stone in millimetres/centimetres. All our photographs are taken outdoors in natural light.

What is Pipe Opal?
---------------------------

* In short, Pipe Opal is opal which has formed in round holes inside the rock.

* It is very unique as the only place in the world where you can find it is in Queensland, Australia.

* Pipe Opal is mostly found in soft sandstone boulders. This type of opal can be softer than Boulder Opal due to the much softer host stone.

* Pipe Opal can either be cut removing all the host sandstone or can be cut leaving a layer of sandstone attached to the back of the opal

Opal rates at approx. 5.5-6.5 on the mohs scale which is a similar hardness to glass. It is, therefore very important that you treat your opal very carefully and avoid subjecting it to force whilst setting or to any other activities that could potentially damage or break it.

* Boulder Opal is found only in Queensland, Australia * This type of opal is found embedded in large hard boulders. The opal forms inside thin fissures and cracks in the rock and is generally quite thin which is why the host stone is left on the back of the opal. Due to their dark backing these opals have a dark body tone and tend to be very vibrant. * Boulder Opals can be identified by the layer of solid brown stone left on the back of the stone.

A 'Solid Opal' refers to a stone where the opal is still naturally attached to the host rock in which it formed or is a piece of opal where the host stone has been removed entirely. Solid Opal is not to be confused with opal doublets or triplets which consist of a small slice of opal which has been artificially attached (glued) to a separate layer/s or with synthetic opals which are created in a lab.
