Lacing needle/fid, paracord needle/fid, threaded needle/fid – this handy tool has several names.
The cord is screwed into the tool, which is then used to lead the cordage. By this, you do not have to pull a doubled cord through the work, as you do with conventional needles.
I make them from steel (non-stainless), which in combination with turning them in a mechanic´s lathe allows for thinner walls while still being strong enough. The difference between outer and inner diameter should be as small as possible, to make the needle/fid easier to push through the work. For example, the M3 size has a thread diameter of 3 mm (0.12 in) and an outer diameter of just 3.6 mm (0.14 in).
The tip is turned with a long taper, going down to a rounded point with a width of about half the maximum diameter, to make the entry and passage of the needle/fid easier. Absolutely excellent for single-strand knotwork, like Turks Head knots!
I have made and sold needles like these to professional riggers, who use them to splice difficult “braid-and-core” cordage (for example Dyneema). Being professionals, these riggers know what they want – and what they want is:
* Minimum difference between outer diameter and the inner diameter ( = the cord thickness, more or less)
* A long tapered section towards the point.
* A rounded point – not a sharp one
* A smooth finish from point to end
All my needles/fids are made to these “professional” specs.
Threads are hand cut, in standard M sizes. This means that the thread number indicate the thread´s outer diameter in mm, which is also the suitable cordage thickness for the needle.
All sizes are given as M thread/length in mm. There are 11 sizes, from M2 to M12. From M2 to M5 the sizes are in steps of 0.5 to make it easier to find just the right size.
This is M12/135 mm
Uncertain of what size to choose? The cord´s diameter in mm is the thread diameter that usually works. Since cordage is flexible, it is sometimes difficult to be certain. A good help is to take a couple of threaded nuts in sizes you think might work. See which dimension grips your cord best, and pick the needle with a thread closest to that.
Other sizes and/or with flattened “duckbill” point available as custom order.
