This calm pale purple color noren is made of shijira cotton crepe fabric that is pleasant and comfortable to the touch.

One of the characteristics of shijira fabric is the unique wrinkles or crepes called “shibo.”

It’s a high-grade noren with a combination of two different shijira cotton cloths.

Our noren curtains and tapestries create warm and comfortable atmosphere because they are all handmade and sewn carefully by skilled Japanese craftswomen in Atelier (Art Studio) Kawashima in Japan.

Their products are thoroughly handmade, mostly with natural materials such as cotton or linen.

Noren can be used as a screen or a divider of rooms, and a tapestry.

It may be perfect for a gift or business use and it can also be used many years as an interior decoration at home.

There may be slight differences in length or width because it is a handmade cotton product.

Many of you might have seen noren being hung at the entrance of the shops in Kyoto or Asakusa, cities attract tourists in Japan.

Noren is a fabric hung at the entrance of the shops to block the sunlight. It’s also used as a room divider or a decoration for home use. Some noren are passed down generation after generation and have come to represent the status and reputation of stores or business.

There is a pocket in the upper end of noren to pass a rod through.

Rods for noren are usually made of plastic or wood.

Noren can be used as a partition, sunshade, or decoration for rooms. You can also use noren as a curtain or a tapestry.

▼Working studio: “Atelier Kawashima”

Our products are made by skilled craftswomen, Sachiko Kawashima (mother) and Akiko (her daughter). They have more than thirty years of experience to make handmade fabric products. Now they create various fabric products with the utmost care in their studio, “Atelier Kawashima,” which is located in Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture in the west of port city, Kobe.
