This listing is for 50 grams of Spin Flora hand spun Hemp yarn dyed with natural Indigo plant dye.
Hemp is a bast fibre, that is similar to flax (linen) but a bit finer in texture. Hemp fibre can vary a lot in quality depending on the crop, growing season and how well it was processed.
This hemp is hand spun as a single ply to a fine weight of yarn. It would be suitable to be used as weft in a hand woven item or can be knit or crocheted for craft types of projects. Due to the natural rough texture of the hemp fibre there are small slubs and bumps in the yarn. The hemp will gently soften with age.
This handspun hemp yarn has been dyed in a natural Indigo Vat. The process of dyeing yarn with Indigo is a slow method. The Indigo vat must be nurtured and fed on a daily basis. The yarn is dipped into the vat several times and allowed to dry to produce deepness of colour. Natural Indigo colour does not fully penetrate the fibre, but is applied in layers onto the top surface. Due to the nature of true Indigo dye, the colour flakes off and will gently fade over time, just like your blue jeans.
