Item details

Japanese style cross-back apron, now in plus size. Loose-fitting, very comfortable for most body types, no back ties, with large pockets and good coverage for protecting your clothes. Pattern uses a narrow rolled hem all around. (This apron can be faced or made reversible--I have not included photo illustrations for either of these options.)

Total fabric needed: 1-5/8 yd, 54” or wider fabric (or any fabric wider than 46”,) or 1-1/2 yd 42” wide fabric (will have side seams). If you face or make the pattern reversible, you will need twice the amount of fabric. Seam allowances are ½” (1.27 cm) and are included in the cutting dimensions of the pattern. Pattern can be customized to larger sizes by cutting longer neck straps, although original cutting dimensions can accommodate most sizes. I have recently added a plus-size pattern which can be adjusted to your size after the pattern has been cut out and taped together.

Use ticking, high-thread-count heavy cotton sheeting, linens, linen blends, duck, soft twill, washable decorator fabrics, canvas, percale, or soft denim. Stretchy fabrics do not work well with this pattern. If you use the facing option, use lighter fabrics. You will need a small amount of fusible interfacing for the top band. You can substitute contrasting fabric for top band and pocket but you will need the same amount of fabric called for in the pattern for the main body of the apron. Sewing this apron takes skill in making a narrow (rolled) hem and in top stitching.

Downloads include separate components for the pattern and also for the instructions, or if you prefer you can download the combined package of pattern and instructions. I have also included instructions for printing out your PDF pattern using screen shots.

If you don't want to print out the pattern, draw an 8-1/2" x 11" grid on butcher or kraft paper and sketch the pattern pieces using the measurements on the pattern.

To print out pattern using Adobe Acrobat, download Acrobat Reader at https://get.adobe.com/reader/. Open the pattern in Acrobat Reader. File/Print and then go to Page Sizing and Handling. Click on Poster and click the box that says Tile Only Large Pages. Then click Print. The main pattern should take 15 pages of 8 ½” x 11” paper to print the pattern using wider than 46” fabric OR 18 pages for 42” wide fabric, plus 5 pages of instructions. You can then tape printed pages together.

Easy pattern! I added a waterproof layer on the back and made aprons for a local doula!
