Item details

This beautiful white and grey fleece was sheared from our CVM ewe, Dot, on February 11, 2017. This fleece is white and grey mixed. Like her name, Dot has spots of grey on white. Dot wore a jacket all year and her fleece is very clean. We skirt our fleece aggressively which means that we pull off the leg wool, belly wool, head wool, second cuts, and other parts a handspinner would not want to work with. If we wouldn't want to work with it, we know you wouldn't either!

This fleece is greasy, not uncommon among CVMs. In the pictures, you will see yellow on portions of the fleece. This will wash out, leaving the white portions of the fleece a creamy white. Be sure to use a full measure of scour to cut through this grease.

Sadly, Dot's fleece has weak tips. When we tested it for strength, the tips popped right off. The remainder of the fleece is strong. We would simply cut the tips off as we prepared this fleece for washing. The staple length is 3". After cutting off tips, you will have 2.5", making this fleece a great candidate for woolen preparation. The two colors in this fleece also make for lots of choices color-wise. It would also dye beautifully.

Because this fleece requires some special attention, we are offering it for $15 a pound rather than our usual $20 for a colored fleece. Despite these issues, this is a beautiful fleece with a lovely fine crimp.

Dot was born in 2008. She came to our ranch in 2014 from Wyoming. She was part of a handspinners flock and the owner was looking to sell her animals and retire. We were happy to take her CVMs because we love to add more CVM genetics to our flock. CVM stands for California Varigated Mutant and comes from the Romeldale breed, developed in the 1970s in California. Romeldale/CVM is the official name and it is a United States heritage breed, meaning that there are not many left in the US. Read more at http://www.livestockconservancy.org/index.php/heritage/internal/cvm. This is a fine wool, appropriate for next to the skin garments. Romeldale/CVM has a pronounced crimp and produces a soft, springy yarn.
