About our wood harvesting practices:
We start with carefully selected logs salvaged from urban tree removals in and around the city of Portland OR. We mill them with our thin kerf band-saw mill. Lumber is stored under cover as it slowly air dry for up to two years before going into the kiln. We achieve final moisture content of 6-8% in the kiln. Besides starting out with good quality logs proper drying is the most important step in quality control.
About Kiln drying and why it's important:
* Stabilizes wood: This greatly minimizes movement and/or cracking.
*Acclimates lumber: Balanced moisture content to that of an interior space.
* Finishes bond better and better penetrates the woods surface.
*Eliminates wood boring insects and termites through a final stage of heat treating process.
Harvesting, building and selling goods from urban salvaged wood is what I love to do and has become my company's mission of finding good wood a good home.
