Item details

A pattern to make a long cape (with a collar and without a hood) or a Kinsale cloak, with a gathered hood. This cloak was named after Kinsale, Ireland and was popular throughout the west of Ireland up until the 20th century.

It is great for any Irish Renaissance costuming, but BEWARE! Queen Elizabeth wanted to ban them because she saw them as a sign of open rebellion! The famous poet Edmund Spencer (of Faerie Queen fame) once called it "A fit house for an outlaw, a meet bed for a rebel, and an apt cloak for a thief" Different areas in Ireland would adopt different colors. Wikipedia says that Cork loved red, whilst Waterford preferred green.

These do mimic popular cloak styles from the 18th century, so it might be useful for a woman's Georgian costume, no matter her place of origin!

Wikipedia has some great information about the history and cultural impact of the Kinsale Cloak! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinsale_cloak

This wonderful, and EASY!, pattern was originally published in the late 90s and is currently out of print.

FAQs

I do not currently have wholesale products, as most of the pieces I sell are unique and one-of-a-kind. The quantity of items posted are all I have in my inventory. I try to cater to those who work on a smaller, individual project scale. My customers are typically looking for that one button or that one pattern to complete their costume. My products are all backed with research and documentation as to their historicity, so customers can decide which item might be best suited for their historical project.
