Icon Boards of Basswood also called American Linden, a beautiful light and clear wood traditionally used for Icon Boards. The Boards have Oak braces dovetailed in the back at a two degree angle wedged in after applying beeswax from an altar candle, this allows the brace to move as the board expands and contracts while keeping it from warping.
The board is coated in five sealing coats of rabbit skin glue and then covered in a linen cloth with a primer coat of rabbit skin glue, chalk and marble dust.
After it dries there are 12 layers of gesso applied in thin coats with a pallet knife to press out any bubbles that can form if applied with a brush. The board is then wet/dry sanded to a smooth finish with 600 grit sandpaper.
The gesso recipe used is that of the Prosopon School of Iconology. (www.prosoponschool.org/)
I build the boards from start to finish in prayer. I plane the Linden wood and Oak that I get from a warehouse that drys and cures it rough sawn. I hand pick the wood. The time to make these may be more or less depending on how busy I am and how rushed you are. Please contact me, send me a message through this site with any questions or requests. Thank you. Nic
