"What is REAL?" asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. "Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?"
"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real."
--From The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams
This is a PDF pattern to make your very own Velveteen Rabbit. The inspiration for this pattern is the classic story which has been imagined by numerous illustrators, as well as the period stuffed animals preserved in museum collections. Make your very own version of this classic, and personalize it for someone you love or your own collection.
The Velveteen Rabbit Pattern was featured in Love Sewing Magazine this spring! This is an updated version with more detailed directions.
The finished bunny huggably large. The bunny stands about 14 inches tall when his ears are down, and is weighted to feel like a real rabbit. The pattern is designed for woven, non-stretch fabrics. You can also use velvets (which are often knits) if you interface or underline (the directions discuss how to do this).
Required Materials: 1/2 Yard Main Fabric Fat Quarter (18”x22”) or 1/2 Yard Contrast Fabric Matching sewing thread 1/4 yard cotton muslin or similar plain woven fabric (for weighted bags) Sew-in Horsehair Canvas or medium/heavy fusible interfacing for ears Two 12mm safety eyes Embroidery floss Stuffing (Wool or Polyfill) Ground Walnut shells or poly pellets for weighting (Poly Pellets are not suggested for toys intended for small children). Optional: Additional cotton muslin for interlining or interfacing
This download includes 2 files, a printable PDF pattern which can be printed on a letter sized paper and taped together, and PDF directions. The directions take you through the construction step-by-step with illustrations and photographs.

Very clear, detailed, easy to follow instructions! This pattern was absolutely perfect for making the velveteen rabbit from the original illustrations. Great project for librarians (like me!) and anyone, young or old, who loves this story.
