This black, purple, and pink art yarn was hand spun using dyed merino wool and black Welsh Mountain sheep wool. The black wool is from my mom's Welsh Mountain sheep and although it was washed several times, there is still some lanolin in it, which makes it water resistant--great for hats or other winter outerwear. The lanolin also makes the wool super soft. My hands even got softer when I was spinning it!
Specifics: 3 oz. 293 ft. 98 yd.
I decided I wanted to learn how to spin yarn a couple years ago, but unfortunately you can't own sheep in Chicago. My mom lives on a farm in Iowa, which is where the black sheep live, along with several other free range animals. When the lambs were born in winter of 2016, both the lambs and the moms spent a couple months in the barn with fresh straw and heat lamps to keep them warm (see the last picture). The sheep have thick, wavy, soft wool, which makes it fun to card and spin.
