About the Process: How I make my PC Jewelry
What is Polymer clay? Polymer clay is a lightweight type of harden-able modeling clay based on the polymer polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It typically contains no clay minerals, but like mineral clay a liquid is added to dry particles until it achieves gel-like working properties, and similarly, the part is put into an oven to harden, hence its colloquial designation as clay. Polymer clay is generally used for making arts and craft items, and is also used in commercial applications to make decorative parts.
I make all my own polymer clay canes using the millifiore technique, Millefiore consists of making a roll of clay called a cane. I blend all my colors using a pasta machine, then roll the clay into long snake-like "canes". I assemble these into patterns or flower motifs. The cane is allowed to rest & cool, while the molecules re-attach. I then reduce the cane by rolling & manipulating it. After it is reduced down to a manageable size, I cut it into 3 different sizes of flowers, tiny 1/4", 1/2", 1".The canes are designed so that the pattern runs through the length of the cane, then extremely thin slices are cut off using a tissue blade, to form the beads.
This technique is called millefiore or "a thousand flowers" because the canes can be combined and reduced in size to make more complex designs & even kaleidoscope patterns. The polymer clay is then hardened by baking in an oven at low temperature, about 260 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes. After the piece is cooled, it is then wet sanded, usually using 3 progressively smaller grits of sandpaper. Sanding gives the piece a smooth seamless appearance. Then the piece is coated with a water-based poly finish, for durability, shine & depth of color. Some of my Pillow Beads are coated with Kato Liquid clear polymer clay, this is cured with a heat gun until the finish is crystal clear. Now you know a little bit about how I make my polymer clay designs. It is a labor intensive process. I put a lot of love & care into all my work, to insure that each piece is constructed to the highest quality standard.
