Item details

This is a vintage Split Matching Pair of Australian boulder opal, a superb matching pair. It is getting very difficult to find split pairs for reasonable prices these days. All of the split pairs I have came from a very old opal cutters estate and they have been stable for over 15 years. Once these boulder opal split pairs are gone I won't be able to get more, and each piece is truly one-of-a-kind. The tops are left in their natural state but could be polished if desired.

These are perfect for jewelry-making and designing. Rarely does nature provide matching stones to create jewelry from.

See picture with coin for size comparison. Or message me and I can get exact dimensions for you.

OPAL is found all over the world. It is made of silica (silicon oxide) like quartz, but has water in its structure as well. Opal can be opaque to nearly transparent (crystal opal), almost any color, including white and black, and sometimes displays rainbow colors ("fire")in myriad patterns (precious opal). Opal that does not contain fire is called common opal. Precious opal has been prized for centuries as a valuable gemstone. Opal is the birthstone for October.

Precious opal comes from several localities worldwide, but Australia is by far the best known and most prolific source. Individual areas produce distinctive opal types, and these have their own locality names (Mintabie, Coober Pedy, etc.) Opal contains water, and sometimes the material spontaneously dehydrates and develops tiny cracks, a process known as "crazing". This can occur as soon as the opal is dug up, or sometimes even years later. The best way to avoid crazing is to purchase opal that has been cut and polished and in storage for a long time. This is not a 100% guarantee, but minimizes the likelihood of an unexpected change.

Boulder opal is found in a locality in Western Queensland that was once an ancient seabed. The opal fills cracks in a material called ironstone. If the ironstone is carefully split, some opal remains adhering to both sides and forms a matching pattern of color play ("fire") and is considered true 'precious opal'.

The opal pair shown is high quality boulder opal with many colors.

P.S. Opal fever is real!
