By day, I am an engineer. I realize this seems a slightly odd intro to a product description, but bear with me.

After introducing my Laceweight and Ultimate spindles, I set out to design a medium sized adjustable spindle to add to the Bullsheep spindle line. I began playing with the idea of a trindle, but I really wanted something that would be durable and could stand the wear and tear of being thrown into a project bag. I also wanted something with more spunk than the traditional spindle or trindle (as there is only so much personality that can be contained in whorl or three spindle arms). As the concept for this spindle began to develop, I decided to take the three pointed model of the trindle and blend it with the structure and durability of a traditional drop spindle and... viola! The Trillium spindle was born!

My Design Goals: Spindle must be weight adjustable, durable, mid-sized, and pleasantly spunky

Final Design:

The Whorl-

I designed a 2.7" diameter 3d printed nylon whorl. Similar to my previous spindles, the majority of the weight of the whorl is concentrated near the outer edge and the center, which allows the spindle to spin longer and faster than traditional spindles with solid whorls. The whorl is a three-pointed flower-like shape, and has three inward pointing hubs which can be used to hold silicone beads. The silicone beads come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors providing many options for weight and spin dynamic (while providing an appropriate amount of "spunkiness").

All of the beads shown in the 1st and 3rd photos are included in this listing. Additional shapes and colors of silicone beads for the whorl can be purchased through ChicagoSilicone (https://www.etsy.com/shop/ChicagoSilicone?ref=shop_sugg). The shop owner of ChicagoSilicone is happy to make custom orders for beads in multiples of three (please note that a flat rate of $3 shipping applies to custom orders). If you choose to purchase additional silicone beads, please double check the dimensions to make sure they will fit the spindle whorl (beads for the spindle whorl should have a 2mm hole and be less than ~22mm x ~22mm in the largest dimensions).

The whorl is 3d printed in nylon, which is a more precise material to work with than ABS plastic (allowing for a more intricate whorl design). Nylon is also much more temperature resistant than some ABS plastic or other common plastic 3d printing materials, so the whorl can be left in a hot car on a summer day without melting or warping (I tested this by submerging a nylon whorl in boiling water for ~20 minutes, and saw no warping or damage).

Finally, the whorl can be slid up and down the spindle shaft, which allows this spindle to easily convert between a top whorl and bottom whorl spindle. The whorl can also be slid off the bottom tip of the spindle, allowing for easy storage and transportation.

The Shaft-

The spindle shaft is made of carbon fiber, which is extremely durable and slightly flexible. The diameter of the shaft is the same as the diameter of a size 2 (2.75mm) knitting needle, so the whorl can be slid off the shaft and onto size 2 knitting needle to easily convert this spindle into a supported spindle.

The spindle shaft will hold approximately 1 oz of finely spun fiber.

The Hook-

The hook is made out of steel piano wire, which has a rust-resistant finish and is very strong. The hook is made with a 3 bend design which is easy to hook and un-hook fiber to, and holds fiber securely during spinning. The 3 bend hook is also easier to bend back into shape than a traditional round hook design (if the hook ever gets bent out of shape).

The last listing photo is courtesy of my mother, and shows her first spinning project on her BullSheep Trillium Spindle!
