Item details

This is a traditional ikat design. It was handwoven in the highlands of Guatemala on a foot loom. It is 100% cotton and is 36 inches wide. It is sold by the yard.

Weaving is an art form that has been handed down from generation to generation in Guatemala. The Mayan women weave on backstrap looms to make their blouses. Both men and women weave on the footloom to make the yardage that they use for women's skirts as well as to make the gorgeous fabric that I sell here. It is an amazing process.

The ikat pattern first starts with the person who dyes the thread. He or she ties off the thread and then dyes is sorta like tye dye. They know exactly how to tie the thread so that the weaver can then use it to make the ikat design. I am always in awe of the fabric they create.

Additional policies

All the fabrics on this site are 100% cotton hand-dyed and hand-woven in Guatemala. The regular fabric is 36 inches wide. The fabric is not cut until you buy it. When you order multiple yards, you'll receive your fabric in a continuous piece.

Since these fabrics are hand woven there might be slight imperfections. These are characteristics that make the fabric stand out from machine made fabrics.

The corte pieces are different widths. The width of each one is in the description.

Fabrics should be prewashed before sewing with them. Edges of the fabric should be zigzagged to prevent fraying. Fabrics should be washed with like colors in the washing machine on the gently cycle with a warm wash. In order to ensure that colors don’t run, add 1 teaspoon of the fixative, Retayne, for every yard of fabric. Remove fabric from the machine right after the final spin cycle. Dry in the dryer until damp dry using the coolest temperature. Fabric should then be hung up to finish drying.

Retayne can be ordered on-line from any number of sites such as Joanne’s or Amazon.
