Item details

This Celtic pen is handcrafted from Irish bog oak and would make a perfect gift for a 5 year anniversary for him or her. The ends of the pen are decorated with Celtic knot rings. The Celtic Knot ring dates back to 5th century and represents the truth of eternity and interconnected spirit.

Antique brass Celtic fittings have been used to show off the Bog Oak. The pictures don't do the detail in the wood justice. Bog Oak, when held in the hand, will surprise you in the intricate details that run through this ancient wood.

The pen is presented in its solid maple and rosewood box to finish the excellent display and keep it safe.

The pen is a very comfortable width for writing and takes either standard cartridges (one supplied) or you can own ink with the convertor provided.

About the pen

Material: Irish Bog Oak 5000-6000 years old. antique brass Celtic scrollwork fittings
Colour: Black, dark brown. Brass.
Ink: cartridges or bottled inks.

Blanks are selected from seasoned wood for their grain and colour. The wood is turned to size, sanded through 5 different grits of sandpaper. I then coat with sanding sealer to seal the grain of the wood before sanding this surface smooth again. Next, I rub the wood with Danish oil to bring out the wonderful colour before finishing off with a rubbing of wax for a great finish and protection.

When the trunk gets trapped by its branches and roots in the riverbed, over time layers of mud, sand and gravel cover it. With no oxygen, the wood turns into a fossil.

During hundreds and thousands of years, with iron from the water, the rotting of oak timber is slower. A special role is played by the currents of the underground waters in the creation of bog oak, binding it with tannin in the wood and in this way darkening the wood. This centuries-long process, often termed turns the wood from golden-brown to completely black, while increasing its hardness that it can only be carved with the use of especially sharp tools.
