This leuku has a deep carbon steel blade of about 7" and a hand-carved and finished grip of birdseye maple with a walnut pommel, set with paper micarta spacers. These blades come very sharp and should be kept oiled.
About This Shop:
I am partly Finnish by descent, and my parents and grandparents instilled in me a love of the outdoors and of working with my hands. Everything I create is a labor of love and reminds me especially of my beloved grandparents and of the joy of being close to nature.
Being close to nature means being prepared. These simple, efficient tools have an understated elegance and beauty that really captures a certain Scandinavian ethic: reserved, but good and capable. You want a tool you can rely on when you're out exploring - and it might as well look good, too.
About My Knives:
The leuku is the large working knife of various Scandinavian peoples, like the Sami and Lapp. These knives are well-designed for cleaning and butchering game, light splitting to build a fire or shelter, and other general outdoor duties. They have wonderful balance and keep an amazingly sharp edge for efficient operation.
I personally build and assemble the hilts of these knives. I create my designs with an eye to aesthetic beauty and comfort in the hand. I use a variety of woods and other materials, all of which are carved and finished by hand. Wood, steel, and antler: for the natural connection. Peening the tang - a noisy process - ensures an incredibly secure, long-lasting fit that can be maintained over the life of the knife - which should last forever, if you care for it.
I also construct the sheaths from scratch. Large knives like the leuku get a sheath with a hand-carved wooden insert for security and stability. I cut, decorate, and stitch the leather by hand. A snug friction fit covering half or more of the knife's grip ensures the knife will stay securely in its sheath when you're out in the woods.
Building these knives is a rewarding experience for me; I hope each of them finds a good home where they will be treasured, used well, and properly cared for.
