Item details

This is an enameled copper oval with a cool image of a Sugar Skull done in white on a fabulous red background. I dusted the top and bottom with a touch of white enamel as well. My enamel pieces are kiln fired and for this one I used a rubber stamp of a Sugar Skull and before the ink dried I dusted it really quickly with white enamel powder. Once out of the kiln the ink has burned off and the image is left in enamel. A great way to get lots of detail! This one has been counter enameled on the back with a layer of black.

This measures about 51mm x 26mm and has 2 holes for stringing that measure about 2mm.

Just in case you aren't familiar with the history of the sugar skulls and the Day of the Dead celebrations I found a great website - It talks about some of the traditions surrounding the Day of the Dead which is about celebrating the lives of their deceased ones each November 1st and 2nd. Families and friends prepare beautiful altars (ofrendas) that include candles, buckets of flowers, toys and favorite foods and drink of their loved ones. They believe that happy spirits will provide protection, good luck and wisdom to their families. Ofrenda building keeps the family close.

All of my glass beads, resin creations, wood art and bronze clay pieces are handmade by me in my home studio in Tucson, Arizona. I work in both borosilicate (hard glass) and soda lime glass (soft glass). All of my beads are annealed in a digitally controlled kiln and the bead holes cleaned.
