Amazing Antique Hand Painted Japanese Satsuma Buttons. This beautiful button is very old and is in excellent condition! It most likely dates to the late 1800's to very early 1900's. Measures approximately 1" across. Absolutely amazing button with beautiful design, floral design, pinks, green yellow and a lot of gold.
Satsuma buttons are known for their distinctive glaze. It has the color of ivory and straw with a fine crackle to the surface. The buttons are baked several times before they are finished. The first time they are baked to hold their shape. The second time they are baked 48 hours for the glaze. The button is then painted and slowly baked again. Each time a new color was added, the button was baked again. The buttons were baked one last time in order to embed any gold decoration. Gold decoration is mostly found on older buttons. Initially the decorations were all painted by hand, there were no stencils used. Almost all of the buttons have a self-shank with two holes.
It says that the buttons are re-baked after each color is applied- gold decoration which is mostly found on the older buttons so a lot of time and effort was put into making this beautiful piece. It also has that perfect crackled ivory look! Listing is for 1 button.
