Presented here is an amazing and extremely rare large Italian heart shaped micro mosaic tesserae frame.
~ MEASUREMENT: Opening - 10" x 12-3/4" / Frame - 12-1/2" wide x 17" high x 3/8" thick
This exquisite late 19th century frame has a 10" x 12-3/4" oval opening with exquisite heart shaped border featuring beautiful tiny micro mosaic flowers.
This is a special form of mosaic that uses distinctively small oblong glass pieces called tesserae.
All of the glass mosaic tiles are set in a brass frame with brass backing.
There is a very thin twisted brass wire that rests at the inner edge of the entire frame opening. When gently removed, picture and glass, or mirror can be put in place and then wire is put back in to hold everything in place. The wire is basically spring loaded, and fits nice and tight.
I removed the spring loaded wire and put in a piece of decorative anaglypta paper to make the mosaic pattern stand out. (JUST ANOTE: I was able to put the wire back in by myself, but it is really a two-person job ... four hands, so the wire does not spring backwards and chip any of the mosaic!)
It additionally has a ring at the top, so it can be hung on the wall, but would also look gorgeous resting on an easel stand!
This rare and outstanding piece came out of a very early San Francisco estate, and is definitely a treasure!
These pieces were purchased in Italy, and sometimes in London and Paris, at the turn-of-the-century (late 1890s-1900)
~ CONDITION: Amazing! I see no missing pieces. Brass has aged patination on back interior, and banding, all of which are not seen and just part of the age ... only the beautiful mosaic is viewed!
