Miniature Tree Set of Six:

Tsukumo Sawara Cypress
Thoweil Hinoki Cypress
Cumulus Sawara Cypress
Whipcord Western Red Cedar
White Pygmy Sawara Cypress
Nana Lutea Hinoki Cypress (in back in photo)

The trees in this set are outdoor trees and come in 2 1/4" pots as shown. They can be planted in full sun with well-draining soil. Let the soil dry out a bit in between watering sessions if they are grown in a container, to avoid over-watering. Protect them from extremes while they are young.

As a group, they are cold hardy to zones 5 through 8, or to -20F, some are hardy to zone 3*
As a group, heat hardy zones 8 through 1, see individual zones below
Winter Maintenance: Clean out the dead leaves inside the conifers when you see it
All are outdoor plants
All come in 2 1/4" pots
*The Western Whipcord Cedar is cold-zone 6 and heat-zone 8 thru 6.

From left to right in the photo:

1. Tsukumo Dwarf Sawara Cypress - Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Tsukumo'

A finely textured, soft gren bun that is a must for any miniature gardener. The Tsukumo is prized by bonsai artists so we know it will be a great miniature garden plant. The Sawara Cypress can tolerate hotter and drier conditions than the Hinoki Cypress - but never let the soil dry out completely.

Rich greens
Cute globe shape
Hardier at Zone 4 or -30F
Growth rate is 1" - 3" per year
Zones 4-8, Cold Hardy to -30F
Heat Zones: 8-1
Full or part sun
Regular water
An outdoor plant
Pot shown is 2 1/2" in diameter

2. Thoweil Hinoki Cypress - Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Thoweil’

The Thoweil is new hinoki cypress for your miniature garden with an upright and narrow growth habit. The small, deep green foliage with the naturally sculpted upright habit will add a stately specimen to any miniature garden scene.

Growth: 3" to 6” per year
Shape: Upright narrow
Hardiness: Cold hardy Zones 5-8 or to -20F
Heat Hardy: Heat Zones 8-1
Light: Full sun to part shade
Water: Regular water if in a pot, let dry out to damp in between watering
Maintenance: Clean out the dead leaves inside the shrub when you see them
Tips may turn bronze or amber in the colder areas in winter, it's 'winter blush'
Comes in a 2 1/2" pot
An outdoor plant

3. Cumulus Sawara Cypress - Chameacyparis pisifera 'Cumulus'

'Cumulus' is a true miniature with a growth rate of less than 1" per year. It has a light, tufted cloud with dense, soft foliage that stays soft in maturity too. Shear it back in late winter to keep the globe-shape. If you let it grow naturally without shearing, it will grow into a tall, leggy shrub that is great for a country garden theme.

Wonderful blue-green color
Gets an amber blush to the top in the cold months
Growth: less than 1" per year
Cold hardy Zones 4-8, or to -30F
Heat Zones 8-1 but avoid extremes to be safe
Sun to part shade, watch the hot summer sun if in a container
Regular water if in a pot, let dry out to just damp in between
Comes in a 2 1/2" pot
An outdoor plant

4. Whipcord Western Red Cedar - Thuja plicata 'Whipcord'

The unusual foliage on this low, mop-head like plant consists of long, thick, glossy tendrils that suggest independence Day fireworks. Unlike the species, which is a giant forest tree, the many branches seem to explode upward and send sparks cascading in all directions.

Green in summer, the foliage changes to bronze in winter, matching the richly colored wood. Every garden can accommodate the small, dyanamic conifer that demonstrates some deer resistance.

Drooping foliage is glossy green in the summer with a bronze cast in winter. Tolerates shade.

Globe shaped
Growth rate: 3" to 6" per year
Hardy zones 6 to 8, or -10F
Heat hardy zones 8 to 6
Full sun to part shade.
Pot is 2 1/2" in diameter

5. White Pygmy Sawara Cypress - Chamaecyparis pisifera 'White Pygmy'

The coloring is just lovely in the miniature garden - as the tips of the tiny foliage are a lovely cream color, turning into a beautiful gray-green color as you follow the branch towards the center of the shrub.

Shear it in late winter to keep it in a tight ball and to encourage the white tips. Full sun brings out the white tips also. A very fun cypress!

Creamy tips with rich grey-greens
Fun globe shape
Pretty coloring all year round
Growth rate less than 1"/yr
Zones 5-8, Cold Hardy to -20F
Heat Zones: 8-1
Full or part sun
Regular water
Shear in late winter to promote white tips
An outdoor plant
Comes in a 2 1/2” pot

6. Golden Dwarf Hinoki Cypress - Chameacyparis obtusa 'Nana Lutea' (in back in photo)

A popular choice for the miniature gardener. This reliable, slow-growing dwarf hinoki wears wonderfully rich, green and yellow foliage, turning into a darker emerald green as the branch goes toward the trunk - just lovely!

Trim away the bottom branches to expose some of the trunk to turn it into a tree shape.

Deep, rich, green and yellow foliage
Apright broad in shape
Growth rate is 3 to 6"/yr - less than 2" here in the Seattle area
Hardy to -20F or zone 5
Heat zones 8-1
Full sun or cool sun
Regular water with well drained soil
If in a pot, let dry out to barely damp in between to avoid over watering
Shelter the pot from the extreme hot sun in late afternoon in the summer
Comes in a 2 1/2” pot
An outdoor plant
