Item details

Sweet cabinet card image of two little sisters from late 1800's.

Originating in Paris in the 1860's, paper CDV's or "cartes de visite" replaced the more expensive glass and metal photographic media. The diminutive 2.5" x 4" CDV's were inexpensive and became extremely popular as gifts and calling cards.

By the 1880's the CDV was replaced with the large, 4.5" x 6" cabinet card.

The identity of the photographer was often missing from the earliest images or was printed in small type just below the picture or on the reverse of the card. By the 1880's the ornate designs and typography presented photographers name, address, and credentials and filled the reverse of the cards.

The cards have been scanned at high resolution and carefully restored. Images are provided as jpg's at resolution of 300dpi. CDV's have been sized up to aprox. 6.5" x 3.5" and cabinet cards are aprox. 5.5" x 4.25".

Larger images at higher resolutions are available. Please contact me for any special requirements.
