Item details

An amazing little vintage Japanese zokin cloth.

A zokin is a traditional Japanese dust cloth or cleaning rag. It is usually made from old pieces of kimono cotton or silk and is layered and stitched for durability.
The stitch they use is called a sashiko stitch.
In every home, mothers and grandmothers used to sew zokins and store them in a drawer for unlimited supply. Zokins are used to clean everything inside and outside of the house such as furniture, floors, bicycles and cars.

This example is made using patches of silk kimono in a rust brown and black ikat pattern on one side and strips of brown ikat cotton yukata on the revserse. It is stitched with a cream thread.
I do not know the origin of this zokin, but I believe it could date from early 1900s.

In used vintage you would expect from an item with this history.
There are holes, repairs, some loose threads and dirty marks...but I haven't cleaned it and it would certainly benefit from a delicate wash.

Width 28cm (11")
Length 37cm (14.5")
The last image shows a few other zokins which I am also selling...please see my other listings.

I just love everything about this little piece of it was made, what it was used for and what it could be used for...its just perfect for textile art or any number of craft projects.
