Kokeshi originated at the very beginning of the 19th century in the Tohoku region northeast of the Japan prefectures: Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Yamagata, Miyagi and Fukushima. First toy for kids, kokeshi making developed in the peasants of the region between 1830 and 1843. Nowadays, kokeshi contribute to the nostalgia of "home" now, found in the shops in airports where they are presented as "most well known Japanese dolls in the world".
