Beautiful, original, interior door lockset made by "Russell & Erwin Mfg. Co." of New Britain, CT circa 1897. The set includes 2 bronze knobs, 2 bronze escutcheons, an iron mortise lock with bronze faceplate & 1 working key, 1 bronze strike plate, and a spindle with 2 setscrews. All bronze parts are made of solid bronze, not plated steel. The lock is reversible and could accommodate the swing of any door.
At the point of salvage, some parts were painted and all were dirty and unevenly tarnished (see last photo). Since then, we removed the paint and tried to clean all parts to a uniform finish.
We found the unpainted escutcheon without a knob collar. We added one from our collection. Although it doesn't match the knob collar of the other plate, this is a detail that is only noticeable when the plates are side by side. Once installed on a door, only a keen observer will be able to spot the difference.
Considering the he set is about 120 years old, it's in great shape! All parts have the typical nicks and scratches that you would expect to find on a set this old, however, there are no breaks, cracks, chips, gouges, or heavy scratches. The lock was opened, inspected, and we sprayed grease on and around all parts to facilitate their movement. We made a key to operate the lock and could make more for $8/key--email us after the auction if you're interested.
