This white fleece was sheared from our well-loved ewe, Dolly, on February 11, 2017. Dolly was born in spring 2008 and is a Rambouillet CVM cross. The staple length is 3.5"
Sadly, Dolly's tips are weak and pull off when testing for fiber strength. The remainder of the fiber is strong, and a good pair of scissors to cut off tips will result in a beautiful fiber ready for processing by hand or at a mill. As you cut off the tips, the remainder will have a shorter staple length (2"-3"), making it a perfect candidate for woolen preparation or for felting. This fiber takes dye beautifully.
Dolly wore a jacket, but she seems to have gotten a fair amount of vegetable matter (VM) in her fleece - about 20% of the fleece has small bits of VM as you can see in photo. This is concentrated on the tips and will come off as you cut the tips.
Because of the weak tips and the bits of VM, we are offering this fleece at the BARGAIN price of $12/lb., down from our usual $18/lb.

We skirt our fleece aggressively which means that we pull off the leg wool, belly wool, head wool, and other parts a handspinner would not want to work with. If we wouldn't want to work with it, we know you wouldn't either! Rambouillet and CVM are both fine wool fleeces, very soft with a tight crimp. These qualities make it elastic, springy and lofty. It is appropriate for next-to-the-skin garments.
