Lapis, is a deep blue gemstone used as a semi-precious stone prized for its color since antiquity. Lapis has been mined as early as the 7th millennium BC. It was highly valued 3300-1900 BC. Today, mines in northeast Afghanistan and Pakistan are still the major source of lapis lazuli. My free form cabochons are polished to a satin gloss that enhances the deep blue with some matrix of golden pyrite and bands of white calcite.

Dark blue Lapis is a very desirable gemstone. I enjoy cutting and polishing this stone because it will become a beautiful pendent or pin. It is an excellent stone to polish. This particular stone looks better with an angular cut.
